Can a debit card be used in place of a credit card for online purchases?

Alicia asked:

I’m looking to purchase some of my brother’s Christmas gifts online this year, mainly because I’ve found some good deals. I would like to use my debit card if possible, but I don’t know if I can. I figure this way, I’m only using the money we’ve put back for Christmas spending and avoid using my credit card at all this year.

Can I use my debit card to make online purchases? Or do different sites have different policies regarding this? If so, how would I go about finding this information?

Thanks so much for any help =]
It’s a MasterCard =]
The money on my debit card is not linked to my checking account, just to clarify. The money comes from another source, and I am absolutely not using my credit card this year.

If it has the Visa or Mastercard logo, you should be able to use it just like a credit card.. If it is just the bank ATM type card, probably not.

yes you just use it as a credit card…I do it all the time. They will just need the number, name of card, exp. date, and 3 digit code on the back.

I think so, as long as there is enough money in the account to cover the cost.

Yes you can but I’ve heard that it’s safer to use a credit card w/ a low balance. I think the reasoning for not using a debit card is b/c it is directly linked to you checking/savings account.

I use my debit card all the time to make online purchases – have done for years, without any problems.

As Tam said, just use it as you would a credit card. So long as you have the funds to cover it, you will have no problems.

    A note of caution:
57 per cent of UK CREDIT cards provide purchase protection, which automatically insures new purchases against loss, theft or accidental damage, up to approx £1,500. (this applies to all purchases, not just online ones)

Likewise, some DEBIT cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo also provide protection under the same scheme. For peace of mind, you would be wise to check with your card issuer that you are covered before making your online purchases.

    Happy shopping!

ps. apologies in advance, if this is stating the obvious – But always make sure that any site where you input your card details displays the padlock symbol, and the url starts with https.
Then, you can be sure that you have a secure connection and that your card details will be encrypted to keep them secure.
