How will my fiance’s bankruptcy affect my (good) credit score after we’re married? Can I still buy a house?
abbythedog asked:
He has about $430K in medical bills (no other debts) from recent cancer treatment while uninsured. My credit score is about 700 and I’m concerned that we’ll have a hard time securing credit after we’re married (we would like to buy a house).

Are there any things I can do to mitigate damage to my credit score? Do they always have to look at both partner’s credit when evaluating loan applications? I may be able to qualify for a mortgage with just my income (~$90K). Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

sd long as your finances re kept seperate it will not effect you at all.. unless you try to get something together..you will have to do any credit things on your own.. and do not include home…he can file bankruptcy that will not effect you.

Keep your Fiance’ off the loan. His debt will not affect your unless you have joint debts. You could put the loan in your name only. Depending on what state you live in, you will most likely have to put him on the deed if the loan closes when you are married. You can either close on the loan before you are married or wait until his BK is discharged. If you need any help, I am a loan officer. Call me at 1-888-777-5737, I would love to help.
