I am helping my best friend clear up her finances and she has many, many old collection notices on her credit report that are helping to drag her rating down. They are probably 4-7 years old. Do these ever fall off? Or get written off? It seems like they just keep transferring them to other agencies. She also has a Household Bank credit card in collections – should this be paid first or the old debt? Most sites seems to offer some sort of dumb trial or offers, and will provide the free reports only if you give them your credit card number. What kind of crap is that?

After further inspection I noticed that only one credit card had reported a credit limit/max balance and that all of my credit cards hadn’t been reported since April. What is the best most reliable and cheapest place to get my credit score?

Also, what are some way to raise my credit score? Obviously to pay off anything thats not paid off. Should I close out cards I have low balance on and don’t use much? Should I write companies and make sure they take old things off my credit report?
