Can a debit card be used in place of a credit card for online purchases?

I’m looking to purchase some of my brother’s Christmas gifts online this year, mainly because I’ve found some good deals. I would like to use my debit card if possible, but I don’t know if I can. I figure this way, I’m only using the money we’ve put back for Christmas spending and avoid using my credit card at all this year.

Can I use my debit card to make online purchases? Or do different sites have different policies regarding this? If so, how would I go about finding this information?
Thanks so much for any help =]
It’s a MasterCard =]
The money on my debit card is not linked to my checking account, just to clarify. The money comes from another source, and I am absolutely not using my credit card this year.
