I am an immigrant (green card) resident of the US. I own my house and have excellent credit rating. My wife recently got her green card and SSN. We asked our local bank for a secured credit card so that she can build her credit. The bank refused the application and demanded that they need a US citizen to cosign for my wife’s credit card, even if we are asking for a card that is secured by our checking account with the same bank. This is absurd because we have joint accounts with this bank from last 5-6 years and have healthy deposits. They wouldnt even let me add her to my existing credit card! We dont know aany US citizen who will cosign for us but thats besides the point anyway. Can the bank discriminate like this?

I’ve seen applications online for secured cards that always ask for employer and salary. But I’m a student and would like to use some of my loans to start up some good credit. I’d only use it to pay for utilities and normal things, then pay it off each month.

Okay, so I tried to apply for Capitol one first and it denied my application. Then I tried Bank of America and they also denied my application, but offered a secured credit card to me as a preapproval. Could it be because of the two student loans I borrowed? It’s not even disbursed to me yet though. What can I do to qualify? Am I doing something wrong? I am trying to establish credit because I have no credit history, besides the loans I just applied for school like last month and they’re not even given out to me until like August. Thanks

I am trying to get my first credit card, but I have been denied after applying for a regular credit card and a store credit card. I then went online to read more about this topic and decided to apply for a secured credit card called, Bank of America Platinum Plus Visa because of how easy it is to get for those with no credit so I sent my application with a money order of $500 for the secured account.

Today I got a letter in the mail saying that I was denied basically because I have no credit and that I will get my money order returned to me by mail.

I did not expect to get denied for a SECURED CREDIT CARD … excuse the caps lock. This just blew my mind. There is no risk on their part! What the [beep] … [crumple the envelope in the palm of my fist]! Why are they even checking my credit history (rhetorical question)!?

Ok, I am calm again. What do I do? Is all hope lost?

i want to get a bank of america secured credit card because my credit score is 550,but thats not my fault.my thing is they want 300.00 in a deposit but on the application it say’s you can deposit 300.00 to 10.000 in increments of 100.00 but when i tried to complete the application the wanted 300 up front.what does that mean? i’m afraid i won’t get approve and don’t want to send this kind of money when i ain’t gonna get approved.did anybody apply for this card and get approved?
